Obama and Xi Jinping announcement: a huge step for climate action? Or a backward step?

Date Published:

Obama is currently a ‘lame duck’ president with a hostile senate, and approval rating that suggests a likely hood the next US president may well be a republican.

In Australia when the less conservative party took a position to take steps to address climate change, it became a call to arms for conseratives opposed to any action on climate change.  The conservatives moved from favouring an emssions trading scheme, to effectively opposing any real action.  Then the conservative won power and there was an unwinding of steps to address climate change.

Similarly in the US, Obama taking steps on climate change will almost certainly galvanise those in the republican party who are most doubful about human actiivy driving climate change.   In could become a key platform of the republicans to abandon the very plans announced by Obama.

Of course, the key stategy from Obama to avoid this is to allow the counter position that unwinding Obama’s targets could leave the republicans with a policy that suggests China is more sophisticated that the US.

The initiative by Obama in his current position IS dangerous because of the risk of a backlash, but with China on board it also could possibly work.  Which was will things go? Only time will tell.

Lord Trumpemort and the ballot eaters: doom for democracy?

History proves that it is not only in fiction that even the most questionable agendas imaginable can attract many followers. And, like Voldemort, Trump also has a plan to return even if he has no right to return.

Trump now has the weight of a political party behind his likely actual belief that the electoral process in the USA cannot be trusted to declare the genuine winner the right to rule, and to Trump followers, after the next election he will be their president no matter who is initially declared winner.

Even if Trump is not declared winner from the vote count, he could still be appointed, and if not, there will be the threat of a coup to end elections from tens of millions who will see Trump their president in internal exile. If Trump does become president again, he will take steps to prevent the “injustice of 2020” ever being repeated again. Perhaps it makes sense that his enemies are called the “democrats”.

The global consequences of Trump being returned to power go beyond the US and beyond democracy.

Climate is only 1 of 9 planetary boundaries for the path to our rare opportunity.

Despite the common assumption that Earth always will and always has been able to support human life, we live on planet with a dying biosphere that only will soon end this current brief period of naturally support for complex life.

Our rare, if not unique, opportunity is to use the window rather than prematurely close it.

Assuming climate change is an existential threat and not merely an inconvenience, but CO2 emissions are only 1 of 9 planetary boundaries that must be observed in the to keep the window open.

The dawn of the Anthropocene puts risks not only long-term CO2 balance, but the challenge of working within all planetary boundaries and respect that, growth within a shrinking biosphere will from now be a restraint for the rest of the our age of one finite planet, and until we can seize the opportunity to become multi planet to this one currently dying planet and before it’s too late.

Covid-19 Immunity: Layers, immunity from vaccination vs infection, and the good news.

Shrek: No. Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.

Shrek

Instead of a single immune response, the human immune system can be though of as having several layers of immune response, that all fade at different rates.
Immunity is a complex set of different layers all subject to change over time at varying rates, making comparison between immunity following vaccination or infection highly time dependant.
